Is Anders Behring Breivik insane?

July 28, 2011

The short answer, based on my reading of his manifesto, is “no”.

Many people have labeled him as an insane, psychotic madman. Even his lawyer has said that he is most likely insane. However, this is not the impression that I get of him.

Taking inspiration from a number of authors, he has very strong anti-Islamic views. Although one may not agree with these, nothing about them makes Breivik insane. And as negative as his views might be, they’re not much more than a strong version of view that is not that uncommon. It’s not hard to find people who are far more critical of Islam than the average Westerner, or who are deeply disenfranchised with the way Europe is heading. There is a reason that a lot of his manifesto is copy and pasted from other works:

I have written approximately half of the compendium myself. The rest is a compilation of works from several courageous individuals throughout the world.

Even if Breivik has misrepresented some of his authors, this shouldn’t affect one’s assessment of his sanity. He’s hardly the only person to have [mis-]used another’s words for their own purposes.

It seems reasonable to me that, given how much time he spent on his manifesto, Breivik could have easily formed his opinions without the aid of any madness. He was working on the manifesto since 2002, including three years full time:

I’ve spent a total of 9 years of my life working on this project. The first five years were spent studying and creating a financial base, and the last three years was spent working full time with research, compilation and writing. Creating this compendium has personally cost me a total of 317 000 Euros (130 000 Euros spent from my own pocket and 187 500 Euros for loss of income during three years). All that, however, is barely noticeable compared to the sacrifices made in relation to the distribution of this book, the actual marketing operation;)

Can you guess what the “marketing operation” is? (Do you like the winking smiley?)

Furthermore, his strong opinions make even more sense given the way he tried to limit contact with others, especially near the end of the project. This deliberate isolation surely would have helped nurture his ideas. He was incredibly focused and judging (in the Myers-Briggs sense of the word), but not insane.

I spent three years were I focused on writing the compendium, 2083. During a 12 month period in the beginning, I also played World of Warcraft part time (which had been a dream for some time – hardcore raiding:). I lived very ascetic and relatively isolated in this period. These three years would also contribute to detach myself from my “old life”. It’s a process I used in order to isolate myself from most of my network, in preparation for the coming operation. I feel that this period was needed in order to completely ”detach myself from “the game”, my “former shallow consumerist lifestyle ” in order to ensure full focus on the matters at hand.

Now, there is a very big leap from identifying a problem with Islamic immigration into Europe and blaming the powers that be for this, and deciding to murder 76 people. Yet, as detestable and wrong his actions were, I don’t see the need for any insanity for reaching his conclusions. I don’t find it hard to imagine that he spent massive amounts of time thinking about this, and following his ideas to a more-or-less valid conclusion.

People with big ideas tend to think they are “allowed” to do big things. While murdering 76 people is a very big thing, Breivik had grander plans than that — a full-scale war in Europe to overthrow the “multiculturalist” governments, reversing Islamic immigration, and turning Europe into the “Christian” Europe of the 1960’s. Although his crimes are much greater, I think Breivik is no more insane than Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment.

It would be fair to say that he has delusions of grandeur, but not in the medical sense of the term. He has plans for restructuring the entirely of the European governing system (even including a discussion on what to do with European royalty) and the church (including merging the Protestant churches back into the Roman Catholic Church). But again, I can see this coming from thinking about this far too much, rather than any mental problems.

I guess it would be more comforting to say he is insane. It makes his crimes the irrational acts of a madman, which makes them unprovoked and random, and there is nothing that could be done to prevent them. Unfortunately, from reading his manifesto, I only see the workings of a cold and calculating mind that follows its ideas to a rational conclusion with tragic consequences.

I might as well point out that Breivik expected to be labelled as insane, amongst other things:

… the cultural Marxist/ multiculturalist government will likely try to attempt to “assassinate my character” by labelling me as an “insane, inbred, pedophile Nazi loser”.

And:

I have been thinking about my post-operational situation, in case I survive a successful mission and live to stand a multiculturalist trial. When I wake up at the hospital, after surviving the gunshot wounds inflicted on me, I realize at least for me personally, I will be waking up to a world of shit, a living nightmare. Not only will all my friends and family detest me and call me a monster; the united global multiculturalist media will have their hands full figuring out multiple ways to character assassinate, vilify and demonize. They will possibly do everything they can to distort the truth about me, KT and our true objectives, and attempt to make even revolutionary conservatives detest me. They will label me as a racist, fascist, Nazi-monster as they usually do with everyone who opposes multiculturalism/cultural Marxism. However, since I manifest their worst nightmare (systematical and organized executions of multiculturalist traitors), they will probably just give me the full propaganda rape package and propagate the following accusations: pedophile, engaged in incest activities, homosexual, psycho, ADHD, thief, non-educated, inbred, maniac, insane, monster etc. I will be labeled as the biggest (Nazi-)monster ever witnessed since WW2.

And:

Q: But doesn’t it worry you that 95% of all Europeans will openly detest you and call you a murderer and a terrorist?

A: It’s human nature to be selfish, to seek admiration, love and affection. This is why very few people will have the self insight, the ideological and moral confidence and strength to act selflessly on behalf of their own countrymen on their own initiative without a solid hierarchical organisation or country supporting and encouraging them. We have taken these thankless tasks upon ourselves because we possess these traits; the self insight, the ideological and moral confidence and strenght and we are willing to sacrifice our lives for our brothers and sisters, even though they will openly detest us. It can be illustrated like a parent spanking their ignorant child. The child will hate their parents there and then but in time they will understand that their only intention is to protect them. In phase 2 and 3, many of these brothers and sisters will hold our banner and chant our hymns because they finally understand.

What do you think?
